Community partners, including DCSD, will support this new ICE. Whereas the District led the development of ICE, it will now become a partner with other entitites and become one among equals to promote engagement, assets, and positive activities among youth with significant adults.” (Arne Watland, DCSD Supt, 6/12/08]

Other stories of past QS2

  • YFSD(?)-building on the foundation of 67-07 CE activities, do series of arts, community engagement, and youth advocacy activities in each village, engaging parents and community members with youth, and reinforcing traditional Athabascan values through art projects and increasing awareness of developmental assets framework as a strength-based way to look at youth success. [maybe make this a bigger blurb and not lump with current Qs2 districts since we ended their official QS2-hood a yr ago, but good stories and photos.]
  • Pribs is also worth a blurb but not with current QS2 districts.

QS2 Data

  • Larry: At our JAM meeting could you please provide a short overview of what stories the data indicates this year?

BECKY JUDD

DHSS
  • The only new piece I think I can offer is: DBH offered 3 years of funding to community based organizations to increase resiliency, connectedness and life skills. Several organizations applied... that will focus youth leadership efforts, and increasing school climates. Maybe there is some new YRBS data??

SOY
  • Blog is new - do a write up
  • # of YFB total to date
  • Could do a photo of winners if you want from Banquet ??
  • Will find some results from our new data...not sure what they are yet.
  • Selected as an innovative program by SAMHSA
  • ATMI got a story on NPR
  • Could update the type of stories they had.
  • Not sure we have any quotes this year... So much transition this year...its hard highlight new things... we were hanging on to our shirts!!!!!

United Way

  • Highlight results - unknown what they will be for GG and key informant community interviews
  • Something about the Community plan...
  • Creating a youth council.
  • Creating a YDS
  • Hosting the High Scope academy... will see about photos...

SHELLY EIDSNESS

Unalaska

  • Unalaska is the only district in the state (to date) that has decided to sustain their Community Engagement work by attributing $10,000 from the district budget to continue with CE activities. YAY! They truly believe in this work and are proving they value it by backing it up with funding.
  • Also, the staff in-service that Suzie and I did out there resulted in the Supt, and both principals getting on board with the development of SEL skills for their students as a way to better prepare them academically, socially, and as employees. Afterwards at the board meeting, Supt John Conwell announced that research into a SEL curriculum was in the works. The board wholeheartedly agreed! How cool is that?!!

Comments from the PSG CEA, Savann Guthrie

  • ‘Personal invitation and person-to-person relationships are what drive this work. It’s not organizations or their boards, but it’s people and their relationships with others that makes this work.’
  • ‘The PSA’s on the radio have worked really well to educate the community on the assets. I have had a few adults in the community without kids tell me they never realized before that it’s also part of their responsibility to help kids. ‘

Delta Greely

  • This year, Delta Greely’s Summer Outreach Program/Theatre Camp resulted in the creation of the book and play, ‘Misty Caboose, The Kind-Hearted Moose’, which was performed at the Deltana Fair in July of 08. The students received awards for Best Comedy/Drama. (30 youth – pre-k thru high school participated)

HANK OVERTURF

*Dillingham City School District QS2

Dillingham City School District finished it’s QS2 Partnership with AASB in 2008. Dillingham has done a great deal to infuse Developmental Assets© in the fabric of the community of Dillingham. The Dillingham City School District has authorized a $2,000 stipend for the Community Engagement Advocate/teacher Kathy McLinn to continue building and maintaining partnerships in the community to support youth.

Lower Kuskokwim QS2

Lower Kuskokwim School District finished its 2nd year as a QS2 district in 2008. The seven sites in LKSD that are QS2 sites conducted two sets of parenting classes. Both sets of classes were delivered in Yup’ik. One session of 8 classes was run during November/December and one session of 8 classes was run during February/March. Sessions were delivered from Bethel via video conferencing equipment to the seven remote villages. The instructor and an elder helped deliver each session. Over 50 parents and students attended the sessions.

This year LKSD has purchased the curriculum and will be delivering an expanded version of the parenting classes to the seven sites with the idea of expanding the delivery to other sites. This years format will consist of four classes. Two of the 8 week sessions will be at an introductory level with the two sessions in the second half of the year being more advanced study.
